One Simple and Chic Denim-on-Denim Styling Secret

Okay… so maybe it is not an actual secret, but it is a really good tip on how to make styling denim-on-denim actually look good and not like a full on Canadian Tuxedo (insert Brittany Spears and JT throwback here lol).

When it comes to spring and its weird rollercoaster temperatures, I always grab for my handy-dandy denim jacket. The thing is though, denim jackets do not always look great paired with a denim bottom. Sometimes a denim-on-denim outfit can be a little overwhelming and hard on the eyes, especially if the denim you are wearing are all of the same wash or shade. Denim on denim outfits can be styled so well and look killer, but I feel like there are many times when it just does not work.

So here is my quick, simple, but chic little “secret“. When styling a denim-on-denim look, use denim that are of different washes or shades. This will prevent your outfit from looking like a sea of denim (although a sea of denim sounds pretty wonderful).

In the outfit that I styled for this blog post, I used a dark-wash pair of denim with a light-wash denim jacket. You could obviously create the opposite effect by wearing a dark denim jacket and a lighter wash pair of jeans (I love this photo from Pinterest for some inspo). I just find that styling an all denim look with this method can look so chic, and it can prevent you from looking like a blob of denim! I tried brings some spring onto the blog and into my feed with this outfit, but as I write and publish this post we are just at the beginning of a blizzard… yes a blizzard in April. I am convinced that we may never be done with winter at this rate, and I may or may not have tried to convince Austin that we might need to travel to somewhere warmer if this winter weather does not stop soon (lol).

I know this post is simple and maybe this so-called secret was obvious to you, but I think that in the season of denim jackets (or at least it should be… here it is still the season of puffer coats) this is an important styling tip. I say this because I know that I am not the only one whose go-to second layer is their denim jacket. It would be an easy solution to just pair your denim jacket with a white or black pair of denim, but knowing how to style it with other blue shades of denim will help make throwing spring outfits together a little easier (and stop you from drowning in that sea of denim I mentioned earlier).

I hope you guys stay warm and safe this weekend if you are getting hit by the blizzard! If you are experiencing normal weather for this time of year, soak it up for us because we are in deep need of it over here!
